Direct flights to New York from Newcastle
American Airlines had planned to launch direct flights from Newcastle to New York JFK in May 2005, but this route was shelved due to high fuel prices. Given the current economic situation, we don't see much likelihood of these plans being reinstated any time soon. Even if these flights had started, they would have been the only flights to New York operated by American Airlines from any UK airport outside London Heathrow. By contrast, Continental Airlines offer flights to New York Newark from no less than eight UK airports, including two in London (Heathrow and Gatwick), and six regional airports (Belfast International, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow International and Manchester).
