Although there are three airlines offering direct non-stop flights to New York from Manchester (Continental, Air France/Delta* and Pakistan International Airlines), most price comparison and online consolidator websites only feature flights from the American carriers Continental and Air France/Delta*. Depending on whereabouts in the New York area you are ultimately trying to get to, you might want to consider your arrival airport (either JFK or Newark) as much as price, because there is often only a few pounds difference between these two airlines. Continental’s flights arrive into Newark airport, which is great for access to anywhere in New Jersey, or neighbouring Pennsylvania. By train, Newark airport is slightly easier for access to downtown Manhattan, but if you're planning on reaching Manhattan by taxi, the journey from Newark airport can end up costing you a great deal more, as you will have to pay for tunnel tolls in both directions, and an ‘out of state’ supplement due to the fact that the taxi goes from New Jersey to New York. On the other hand, JFK Airport, which is used by Air France/Delta, is certainly much more convenient for accessing New York boroughs such as Queens and Brooklyn.

The most popular option for connecting flights to New York from Manchester is to travel via London, especially as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both offer frequent services via Heathrow. In addition to this, there are numerous options for connecting flights to New York via European hub airports, or via airports in the USA. Watch out for timings on flight connections -- in addition to having to spend a long time in the airport, you could end up spending needless extra time by taking a very indirect route -- for example American Airlines flights will take you via Chicago. You will often find that for a few pounds more, you can get a direct flight to New York, and avoid all this hassle.
