At Detroit’s Motown Museum, you’ll witness the modest beginnings of the legendary record label, and the strong black influence on local culture is also much in evidence over at the Wright Museum of African-American History.

Altogether more whitebread are the suburbs that form popular day-trip destinations. At Ann Arbor, home of the University of Michigan, some of America’s brightest young prospects gather and study, while Dearborn, with its Henry Ford Museum and adjacent Greenfield Museum, busies itself in detailing American glories of the past. With Canada just a short hop across the Detroit River, Motor City provides plenty of reasons to get your engine running - or simply to get on the appropriate bus.
