More suggestions for finding cheap flights to Washington Baltimore
Direct flights
Baltimore is served by Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) airport, which is situated to the south of the city on the way towards Washington DC. British Airways are the only airline to offer direct flights from the UK to BWI. BWI is served by US no-frills carriers and is a major hub for Southwest Airlines.
Connecting flights
There are few other European airlines operating direct flights to Baltimore, but regular connections are available through nearby Eastern Seaboard cities, especially New York and Philadelphia. There is also a wider range of direct flights to Washington Dulles airport, which is just over an hour's drive away from Baltimore (depending on traffic conditions on the heavily congested Washington Capitol Beltway).
It is also worth considering taking a train to Baltimore from either Philadelphia or New York. Amtrak offer a good frequency of service on this route at relatively (by American standards) high speeds. New York Newark airport now has it’s own Amtrak station and transfers between Philadelphia Airport and the city's 30th Street railway station can easily be made, either by taxi, or light rail.
If taking the train doesn’t appeal, bear in mind the considerable hassles of transferring between international and domestic flights at major US gateway airports, especially the large New York hubs. It is certainly worth paying extra for a direct flight, especially as British Airways' prices on flights to Baltimore are often quite reasonable.
This should not cause too much of a problem if you are renting a car, as most US rental companies are quite happy to let you return the vehicle to a different location in the same city.
If you are travelling onwards to the centre of Washington by public transport, Baltimore-Washington international has its own dedicated Amtrak station, on the main New York to Washington route, although you still need to allow time to take a shuttle bus transfer between the station and the terminal building.
The local metro system in Baltimore also extends out to the terminal at BWI.
