Atlanta flights summary:

The American giant Delta has direct daily flights to Atlanta from Edinburgh, Manchester and London Gatwick (twice daily). British Airways also offer direct competition with Delta's Gatwick to Atlanta flights. From the Republic of Ireland, direct Atlanta flights are available from both Dublin and Shannon - also with Delta.

Although the majority of UK to Atlanta flights are aimed at passengers making onward connections to other major destinations in the USA, Atlanta is still an extremely important city in its own right, not least because of the amount of growth which has taken place on the back of being the site of the world's busiest airport.

Atlanta doesn't seem to attract the same price premiums for direct flights as some other US cities do, but then again, we're sure that Delta are always happy to provide their passengers with good value flights to their home town.

Delta have recently upgraded their long-haul cabins, although we don't think the Boeing 767s they use on their UK to Atlanta flights are quite as spacious as the Boeing 777s which they once operated, and which British Airways still use on their Gatwick to Atlanta flights.

Connecting Flights

Delta already operate a vast network of flights to Atlanta from numerous cities in Europe, so there are any number of possibilities which might be available for connecting flights. However, you're most likely to be sent via Amsterdam or Paris, because the KLM/Air France group, like Delta, is part of the Skyteam Alliance. If you have a preference for a UK carrier, then you can connect with British Airways through Gatwick, or perhaps fly with Virgin Atlantic to one of their many US East coast destinations, from where onward domestic flights to Atlanta are readily available.

Just to complicate matters further, sometimes you might be offered a mix-and-match routing, for example out via Paris and back via New York Newark, especially as Continental Airlines, who provide flight connections via New York from a wide range of airports in the UK and Ireland, are also part of the Skyteam Alliance.

If there isn’t much difference in terms of price and timings, we would always advise transferring through a European airport, as you tend to experience a lot less hassle with airport security procedures and rude immigration officials - for example, if we were looking for flights to Atlanta from Birmingham, we would certainly choose a transfer via Amsterdam Schiphol, rather than New York Newark.
