  • Flights to USA - Overview

The USA is by far and away the most important long haul destination for flights from the UK, and is second only to Spain in terms of overall passenger numbers travelling from Britain.

    Route developments

In the years after 9/11, many airlines pulled back their transatlantic flights, with several less successful routes being dropped completely. In the last couple of years the market for flights to the USA has slowly recovered, with the ever increasing popularity of Las Vegas resulting in Virgin Atlantic launching flights there from London Gatwick, followed in late 2004 by the start of BMI's Vegas flights from Manchester.

    Regional flights

The no-frills airlines have increased passenger's expectations about being able to take international flights from their local airports, and this in turn has seen airlines like Continental open up a huge range of flights to New York from various UK regional airports. Last year saw the launch of new flights to New York Newark from Bristol and Belfast, following on from the start of the airline's hugely popular Edinburgh to New York flights the previous summer. This year has also seen Delta open up flights from Edinburgh to Atlanta, and from Manchester to New York JFK, which they also now serve from Shannon in Ireland.

Budget airlines / Low-cost flights to the USA

The huge success of no-frills airlines throughout Europe, which itself is largely down to copying the business model established by the pioneering US budget carrier Southwest, is much harder to replicate on flights across the Atlantic. Attempts to offer cheap USA flights date back to the late Freddie Laker's Skytrain in the early 1980s, but are we now set to see a resurgence of budget services from Europe to North America? Zoom Airlines offer cheap flights to Canada from various airport across the UK, and Flyglobespan launched cheap flights to Orlando in Florida from Glasgow this summer. The Florida market in particular has been dominated by charter airlines offering holiday packages, but there are more and more independent travellers who want to book their flights and accommodation separately. It will be very difficult though for many other budget airlines to muscle in on territory dominated by traditional carriers such as British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, who can cut the price of their economy fares thanks to the number of passengers they carry in business and first class.

    New routes for 2007

Next year will see continued expansion from Flyglobespan, who will launch cheap flights to New York from Liverpool, whilst expanding their long-haul network of flights from Glasgow to include Boston and Las Vegas. After three summers of false dawns, Birmingham-based Flywho also plan to start up flights to Florida from early 2007, although we'll believe this when we see it. Meanwhile, back in London, Delta will be starting flights from Gatwick to New York later this year, with an eventual plan to replace United on the busy Heathrow to New York route.

    Premium class USA flights

Following the demise of Concorde, a gap in the market has existed for a similarly exclusive style of service on flights to the USA. Supersonic transatlantic flights have been consigned to history, so two new American airlines have countered the loss of speed by offering unsurpassed levels of luxury. Last year saw the start of the business class only Maxjet, and the even more exclusive EOS Airlines, who operate a Boeing 757 with just 48 flatbed seats. Both these airlines offer flights to New York JFK from London Stansted, with Maxjet having additionally launched flights to Washington, DC and Las Vegas. The new British start-up airline Silverjet aims to offer up to four premium class flights a day to New York from London Luton when it takes to the skies in 2007.

    Direct or connecting flights?

Although there are over 20 cities in the USA which have direct flights in the UK, apart from the main eastern gateway cities such as New York, Philadelphia and Atlanta, it can often be cheaper to take a connecting flight than going for the direct option. Outside the major cities, the US has a huge range of domestic airports, making it possible to reach most centres of population with no more than one change of plane.

    Onward by Train

New York Newark airport has excellent onward connections by train, as well as having the widest range of inbound routes from the UK. If you are trying to reach cities such as Philadelphia, Trenton, Princeton, Baltimore or Washington DC, then this option is well worth considering. Other cities with reasonable medium distance rail links include Chicago and Los Angeles. Mini guide to USA

And lo, someone said: Go west, young man, and seek your fortune. The United States has come under attack during the first years of the 21st century, from terrorists, freak destructive weather and a political and ideological split that threatens to tear the nation left from right. But it is a sign of America's enduring appeal that, even given this tumult, this continues to be the world's most visited country. Understandably so: it's one of the world's biggest landmasses, and offers so much to see, do and experience for travelers, whether they are making their first, fifth or even fifteenth trip across the Atlantic.

The top tourist hotspots remain urbane New York and glitzy Los Angeles, but there's a whole world in between: the heartlands that propelled George W. Bush to power in 2000 and 2004, the ongoing party that is Miami, and its better-behaved older brother Orlando, with its family-oriented theme parks. Make time for America's most underrated cities (Chicago, Boston), and try to visit Washington, no longer just the historic seat of American government, but an eye-opening illustration of the nation's present social divide.
