Flights to Scotland - Overview
The vast majority of flights to Scotland operate through the three main airports in the central belt -- Edinburgh International (EDI), and Glasgow's two airports - Glasgow International (GLA) and Prestwick (PIK). Prestwick airport is dominated by the budget airline Ryanair, whereas Edinburgh and Glasgow International offer a much broader range of flights operated by traditional scheduled, budget and charter airlines. These two airports are both operated by the British Airports Authority (BAA), who also operate Aberdeen airport (ABZ), giving them a virtual monopoly on the Scottish airports market, in a similar manner to the dominance they enjoy in London. Aberdeen has been slow to develop its network of budget flights, with airlines often criticising BAA for the high handling fees they claim are charged there. In the last few months, new routes have been announced by Ryanair (Liverpool) and Flybe (Birmingham, Exeter and Leeds Bradford), bringing some much needed domestic competition into the market, although the range of international flights from Aberdeen remains poor. Meanwhile, the much smaller (but very rapidly growing) city of Inverness is served by regular flights to London, and a few budget flights to destinations such as Belfast, Bristol and Liverpool. All of the above airports additionally have regular flights to and from Dublin.
