Newquay flights summary: Ryanair recently reduced the number of flights between London Stansted and Newquay Airport in protest over a new local departure tax, but this has not put off other less frugal domestic airlines moving in. British Airways have recently restarted flights to Newquay from Gatwick, much to the rather pointless chagrin of Greenpeace (the aircraft was previously allocated on Gatwick to Glasgow flights).
UK Domestic flights from Newquay (including flights to Northern Ireland)
The network of domestic flights from Newquay has expanded in recent years to include a number of cities in northern England such as Manchester, Leeds and Durham. Flybe have reported strong sales on their new flights from Edinburgh to Newquay, which now operate four times each week. Newquay airport is a base for regional airline Air Southwest, who operate regular flights to London Gatwick in competition with Ryanair's flights from Stansted. Newquay airport has recently courted controversy due to a £5 airport improvement charge levied by Cornwall County Council. This has resulted in Ryanair reducing the frequency of their Newquay flights from twice daily to once a day. At the time, this move looked like a publicity stunt to enable Ryanair to scale back their services during the quieter winter period, but we are sure that they are now perfectly happy to be raking in the profits on flights which can cost up to £165 each way, rather than returning to previous frequency levels and seeing a huge drop in prices and profits. Flybe have also stated an intention to make Newquay one of their new bases. This would be a logical move, considering their preference for smaller aircraft, which are much more commercially viable for an airport like Newquay.

Cheap flights from Newquay to Europe (including Ireland)
Attempts to operate international flights from Newquay have been unsuccessful. Charter flights have regularly been cancelled, and Monarch Scheduled withdrew their Málaga to Newquay route after just one winter season, blaming the £5 handling charge, rather than the obvious lack of demand for such a service. The main problem with operating international flights from Newquay is that despite the airport's dramatic domestic growth in recent years, the catchment area for outbound flights is much more limited than it is for other airports in the South West, making it difficult for most routes to be economically viable. As mentioned above, an airline like Flybe, or Aer Arran (who currently operate flights to Cork from Newquay), could make some routes work using their smaller turboprop aircraft, but it remains to be seen whether or not Flybe would use any of their new Embraer 195 jets to offer flights to Mediterranean destinations from Newquay.
