The pioneers of the low-cost travel boom, Easyjet, initially expanded their route network out of Luton, although they have since added many more routes from Gatwick and Stansted. Luton still has a good choice of Easyjet flights to popular European sunshine and city break destinations (especially in Spain). Additionally, most of Easyjet's flights to the new eastern European accession states operate from Luton, where they also face competition from Wizzair. Meanwhile, Ryanair have a limited base operation at Luton, despite having made previous promises to expand much further here. With the sole European exception of the French port city of Brest, all of Ryanair's Luton destinations are also available from Stansted. Luton has always been an important base for holiday charter airlines, with a number of direct booking deals being available through Monarch Scheduled and Thomsonfly. Easyjet have also chosen to operate their flights to Istanbul from Luton.
