Airport Parking at Luton Airport
The rapid expansion of flights from Luton airport brought about initially by Easyjet, and more recently by Ryanair, has meant that most of the land in the vicinity of the terminal building has been covered in a sea of sloping car parks. There are shuttle buses every ten to 20 minutes from all of the on-site car parks to the terminal buildings. There are a limited number of off-airport parking providers, but the choice at Luton is nothing like as substantial as it is at other London airports. That said, the on-site parking charges are not as high as at the three other major London airports. Although there are no hotels directly adjacent to the terminal, there are a couple of airport hotels on the approach road which offer hotel and parking deals.
Can I leave my car at home, or am I better off parking it at Luton airport?
Whatever the airport's marketing team might say, we still think that the lack of a dedicated station facility on the site makes Luton the least accessible of any London airport by public transport. Sure, there are frequent shuttle buses between the airport terminal and Luton Airport Parkway station, and there are frequent trains from here to London and beyond, but having to make this transfer adds significantly to the inconvenience of getting to the airport by public transport. There are coaches into central London, as well as Stelios' Easybus service, with Virgin Trains (coach via Milton Keynes) and National Express providing links to the Midlands. Other buses and coaches provide connections with the centre of Luton and various nearby towns.
Bottlenecks to watch out for near Luton airport
Once you get off the M1 it is usually fairly plane sailing into Luton airport. The one bottleneck is the single carriageway section which runs underneath the taxiway on the approach to the terminal building. The M1 itself is often subject to delays, especially considering that major works are being carried out between junctions 8 and 10a (the Luton airport turnoff) north and southbound until December 2008.
