London Heathrow - Domestic flights summary:
The huge pressure for slots at Europe's busiest airport means that Heathrow is only served by routes to 12 UK and Irish destinations - four in Scotland (Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness), four in northern England (Durham Tees Valley, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle) and four in Ireland (Belfast in Northern Ireland and Cork, Dublin and Shannon in the Republic). Competition is also restricted to just three airlines - British Airways and BMI compete with each other on the busiest routes between London and Scotland, and on the ever popular Manchester - London shuttle flights, whereas flights from Heathrow to Ireland are dominated by Aer Lingus. All of Heathrow's domestic and Irish flights operate from the heavily congested terminal 1. Terminal 1 could best be described as chaotic, but you may well still find that using Heathrow is more convenient than heading out to airports like Stansted or Luton. If cost is not a key consideration and you are based in central London then we would recommend flying from London City to destinations like Manchester or Edinburgh. With the recent improvements on the West Coast Mainline, the train now provides a realistic alternative to flights between London and Manchester (and also Liverpool), whereas GNER have always commanded a significant share of the public transport market between London and the Northeast.
