| Heathrow flights:
The constant pressure on slots at Heathrow airport mean that it is very rare for new routes to Ireland to be launched. As with UK domestic flights, airports which do have a direct link with Heathrow (Cork, Dublin and Shannon) can at least offer decent levels of frequency. Following British Airways’ withdrawal from operating Heathrow to Dublin flights, Aer Lingus has a virtual monopoly on flights to Ireland from Heathrow. BMI add an element of competition on the Heathrow to Dublin route. Following extensive remodelling and cost reductions under the stewardship of Willie Walsh (who has now moved on to BA), Aer Lingus often offer spectacular deals on flights from Heathrow, whilst BMI is usually equally competitive. Ryanair operate a very similar route network of Irish flights from Gatwick, so any choice between these two airports is more likely to be on perceived convenience and personal preference, rather than price.
