Liverpool benefits from one of the most impressive international route networks of any similarly sized European city. Much of it is down to fierce competition between Europe's two largest budget airlines, Easyjet and Ryanair, who both have significant base operations at Liverpool. Compared to nearby Manchester, Liverpool's facilities are compact and easy to use, with the airlines being equally attracted by the airport's lower handling fees. This has enabled Liverpool to develop an enviable network of flights to traditional holiday destinations, established short break cities and an increasing number of emerging Central and Eastern European airports, with many passengers choosing to use the Merseyside hub over its Mancunian rival. This year has seen the launch of more routes to Poland, courtesy of budget airline Wizz in addition to Easyjet and Ryanair; and the arrival of fast growing Scottish airline Globespan.
