Although Ryanair has expanded its range of Prestwick flights massively over the last few years, we think that it is unlikely it will offer many more domestic destinations from here. Major English regional Ryanair bases such as Liverpool or East Midlands are too close to make cheap flights from Prestwick viable, whereas the chances of Ryanair starting flights to Newquay from Prestwick are fairly small, considering the airline’s ongoing arguments with Newquay airport over the development charge it is imposing on its passengers. If any airline were to start Newquay flights from Prestwick, we would expect it to be regional specialist Aer Arran, rather than Ryanair. However much Ryanair repeat the mantra about lowest cost winning, when it comes to domestic flights, passengers want reasonable levels of convenience, otherwise they might as well take the train or bus. For these reasons there is a much more substantial range of domestic flights from Glasgow International, where major players include British Airways and BMI on the full-service front, together with significant low-cost offerings from Easyjet, Flybe and BmiBaby. |
