Doncaster Robin Hood airport’s only route to the Republic of Ireland is with Ryanair to Dublin.Having opened with all guns blazing in April 2005, development at Doncaster Sheffield airport has certainly cooled off of late. Thomsonfly had originally launched cheap flights to Dublin from Doncaster as part of its initial route network, but they quickly scarpered following Ryanair’s arrival on the scene. Meanwhile, Ryanair has only shown a limited interest in offering more flights from Doncaster. During the airport’s early days, Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O'Leary, had suggested that his airline might be able to operate up to three flights to Dublin each day, and that this would be the airline’s focus before it considered the possibility of opening up a base here. Since then, Ryanair might have opened up new cheap flights to Pisa and Barcelona Girona, but both of these are well established Ryanair hubs, where it is always easy for them to bring in passengers from just about any UK airport. Following Ryanair’s recent massive expansion at East Midlands airport, from where it now operates cheap flights to Dublin, Shannon and Knock, we think that it is unlikely that there will be any major expansion in flight routes from Doncaster to Ireland in the near future from Ryanair, or any other airline. Whilst Doncaster airport has not really taken off on the UK domestic routes front, one notable new addition has been Flybe's twice-daily flights to Belfast city. This is a useful option for reaching Northern Ireland, and some destinations to the West of the Irish Republic, although a short a trip up the road to Leeds Bradford or Manchester airport will provide a much wider choice of flight routes.
