Flights to Brazil - Overview
As with all other South American countries, the range of direct flights to Brazil from the UK is fairly limited. However, both British Airways and Brazilian airline TAM offer flights from London to São Paulo non-stop, with services then continuing to Río de Janeiro.
Despite Río's obvious tourist appeal, there are no non-stop flights there from the UK. There is a much wider choice of flights to both Río and São Paulo available via the Portuguese capital Lisbon, which also has direct flights to other Brazilian cities such as Fortaleza.
The sheer size of Brazil makes internal flights the best way of getting around the country, with São Paulo being the main hub for onward connections. Note that both Rio (Santos Dumont) and São Paulo (Congonhas, Viracopos) have more than one airport each.
Following the recent crash at São Paulo's Congonhas Airport, and last year's collision in the Amazon, flight safety has become a serious concern in Brazil. However, this has to be weighed up against the millions of passengers carried each year in the country - Brazil is by far the largest market for flights in South America.

The largest land mass in South America, Brazil's reputation for sun, sea, sand and samba - beaches populated by lovelies in micro-bikinis and lads working on their keepy-ups and free-kicks - remains more or less intact, though the country's bustling, grid-locked, smog-ridden major cities such as Rio and Sao Paulo paint a somewhat different picture. The gap between Brazil's rich and its poor - the one living la vida loca in shiny beachfront penthouses, the other tucked away from sight in cramped hillside favelas - has grown so vast of late that most responsible embassies and travel agents now routinely offer security warnings to travellers who plan to visiting the region.
Of course, if you really want to get away from the urban sprawl, Brazil boasts two considerable selling-points - the mighty Amazon, flowing parallel to the Equator across the north of the country, and the surrounding rainforest, or what‘s now left of it.
