To clarify: not the rugby-playing Samoa - that’ll be Western Samoa - but a self-governing US territory. Situated halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand in the South Pacific, the coves, peaks and beaches of American Samoa’s volcanic islands provide glorious vistas. Much is made in the region of what’s known as fa’asamoa or the Samoan way of life, those ancient customs and traditions best illustrated in the capital Pago Pago’s Jean P. Haydon Museum.

As on most islands, water plays a prominent part. American Samoa’s chief export is tuna fish; the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a vast coral reef ecosystem which plays home to turtles, sharks and giant clams; whilst yachting and scuba-diving have become increasingly popular pastimes. Alternatively, keep your feet on dry land and watch the islands’ football team, assured of seeing plenty of goals: American Samoa capitulated to international football’s worst ever defeat, losing 31-0 to Australia in a 2001 World Cup qualifier.
