Flights from the UK

Flights are available from the airlines listed below:

Last year, competition for flights from London to Knock stepped up with Easyjet launching a new route from London Gatwick. Ryanair launched Gatwick to Knock flights in direct competition, but Knock now seems to have fallen foul of the latest gamesmanship between the two airlines, as both of them have pulled their Gatwick to Knock flights from their winter 2006 timetables. Although the airport have stated an intention to find an alternative airline to fill this gap, we think that the prospect of this happening is unlikely, as there are no other airlines at Gatwick who we would envisage either having suitable slots, or the right kind of aircraft, to operate this route profitably. Meanwhile, Ryanair will maintain their flights to Knock from Stansted and Luton, where there is less pressure on slots. For flights from UK regional airports to Knock, BMI Baby offer inbound routes from Birmingham, Manchester and Durham Tees Valley.

Mini Guide to Knock

This is Ireland’s most visited town, the lasting legacy of events that took place here on August 21, 1879. On that evening, fifteen of the locals claimed to have witnessed the apparition of Mary, Joseph and St. John the Evangelist in the nearby Parish Church. It’s a remarkable story, whether one believes in such matters or not, with the eye-witnesses appearing in front of two commissions of enquiry (in 1879 and 1936) and having their claims ratified each time.

Ever since, Knock has become a destination for the devout, if maybe not quite to Catholicism what Mecca is to Islam, then certainly Ireland’s very own version of Lourdes. One and a half million visitors, many of them sick and in search of better health, make the pilgrimage each year, following the blessings of Pope John Paul II (in 1979) and Mother Teresa (in 1993). Focal points are the Marian Shrine, on the N17 route between Galway and Sligo, and the Basilica of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland, which - seating 20,000 people, more than most contemporary football stadiums - constitutes the largest church in all Ireland. A string of hostels and rest houses are also on hand to provide shelter for the staggering numbers of latter-day pilgrims passing through.

High season runs from the last Sunday in April to the second Sunday in October, though guided tours of the key sites are available at most times of the year. Also worth a visit, while you’re in this particular neck of the woods: the Knock Folk Museum, which charts local life before and after the spiritual turning point in the region’s fortunes, and has a special sidebar on Monsignor James Horan, the larger-than-life priest who established the town’s International Airport.
