  • Flights to Ireland - Overview

The market for cheap flights to Ireland has been led by Ryanair, who now have a substantial base operation at Shannon, as well as a recently expanded hub in the capital Dublin, and a smaller operation in Cork. The airline has complained bitterly about the high cost of the new terminal at Cork airport, whilst maintaining a small base operation there, with flights to several UK cities.

Cheap flights to Dublin are available from just about every UK airport - if not with Ryanair, then with another airline such as Irish national carrier Aer Lingus or Flybe. Western Ireland has a growing range of inbound links from London, whereas Belfast and Londonderry offer alternative arrival points in Northern Ireland.

The Irish regional carrier Aer Arann operate a number of flights between the UK and Ireland on routes where the market is too small for their larger competitors, or where airport facilities are not large enough to handle bigger jets. Aer Arann also offer flights to Dublin from Cardiff, where they replaced Ryanair following a dispute over handling charges; and Inverness.

More recent expansion of links between the UK and the Emerald Isle has seen Flybe announce plans for a direct link between Southampton Airport and Galway, complementing the airline's previously announced Galway flights from Birmingham and Belfast city.

    Mini guide to Ireland

In Ireland, youthful irreverence sits alongside sacrosanct tradition, not to mention stunning scenery. Over the last few decades, the Irish nation has finally started to move out from under years of conservatism. Dublin, the Republic of Ireland’s capital, is Western Europe’s fastest growing urban tourist destination, while Cork served as 2005’s European Capital of Culture.

Religion persists off the beaten track, in small towns like Knock, with its famous shrine to the Virgin Mary. But nowadays the natural world tends to provoke just as much awe in these parts, as in the case of the Giant’s Causeway. With frequent ferry links to mainland Britain and Guinness on tap more or less everywhere, there are many more man-made miracles to explore in modern Ireland.
