A note about reaching Lugano by plane and train:As flights to Lugano tend to be quite pricey, you might find it easier to reach Lugano by train from either Milan or Zurich. Geographically, Lugano, which is situated south of the Gothard tunnel, is certainly much closer to Milan than it is to Zurich. However, getting from any of Milan's chaotic airports onto the train northward to Lugano is a lot more hassle than it should be.
On the other hand, the Swiss rail system offers seamless collections to Lugano from Zurich airport with a brief change in Zurich's main station. This journey, which will offer you some fantastic views of the Alps, usually takes around 3 1/2 hours. Journey times are slightly quicker if you take the Cisaplino tilting trains, which do not usually cost any extra.
If you are travelling around Switzerland on a rail pass, then an alternative way to reach Lugano is via Locarno on the highly scenic Cento Valli (100 Valleys) rail line from Domodossala in Italy, or to take part of the Glacier express route between Brig and Andermatt. Using either of these routes, it should still be possible to take an early morning flight to Geneva, and to reach Lugano by evening.
