More suggestions for finding cheap flights to Basel
The industrial city of Basel has historically supported a limited network of business oriented flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester. However, faced with the need for internal restructuring, and the onslaught of competition from no-frills airlines, Swiss (formerly Swissair) in particular have cut back extensively on their operations at Basel, with their route from Birmingham being one of several to have faced the axe.
On the upside, Basel has increasingly positioned itself as a growth centre for no-frills flights, with Easyjet establishing a major base there, having pulled out of Zurich, due to the ever increasing costs of operating from the Swiss banking centre.
Currently, flights to Basel are reasonably easy to find from London and the northwest, but there are no direct links from either Scotland or the Midlands. Geneva is the nearest major low-cost arrivals point, but the train journey from Geneva Airport to Basel still takes the best part of three hours, compared to just over one hour from Zurich. During the current winter season, it might also be worth thinking about Flybe's flights from Birmingham or Southampton to the Swiss capital Berne, which should work much less cheaper than flying to Zurich. Although Berne Airport does not have a station, there are regular bus links, which naturally, like the rest of the Swiss public transport system, operate like clockwork. Allow just under two hours to transfer from Berne to Basel.
