James Says
The industrial city of Basel has historically supported a limited network of business oriented flights from London, Birmingham and Manchester.
However, faced with the need for internal restructuring, and the onslaught of competition from no-frills airlines, Swiss (formerly Swissair) in particular have cut back extensively on their operations at Basel, with their route from Birmingham being one of several to faced the axe.
On the upside, Basel has increasingly positioned itself as a growth centre for no-frills flights, with Easyjet establishing a major base there, having pulled out of Zurich, due to the ever increasing costs of operating from the Swiss banking centre (although they have since returned).
Currently, direct flights to Basel are reasonably easy to find from London and the northwest, but there are no links from either Scotland or the Midlands.
Geneva is the nearest major low-cost arrivals point, but the train journey from Geneva Airport to Basel still takes the best part of three hours, compared to just over one hour from Zurich - and unless you have a rail pass, the rail fare is going to sting you harder than any difference in flight costs!
