Although there are no direct flights to Umeå from the UK, SAS offer regular connections via Stockholm Arlanda. Unfortunately, Stocholm isn't that well fed by feeder flights from UK airports outside London and Manchester, so you might well find yourself being bounced through Copenhagen aswell. There aren't really many options for DIY connections which will save much time or money, compared with travelling with SAS. Within Sweden, there is competition on domestic flights to Umeå, including a low-cost option with Norwegian Air Shuttle (Stockholm Arlanda). You might find cheap flights to Stockholm with Ryanair, but you will then have to travel in from their remote airports at Vasteras or Skavsta. Flightmapping tip - if you can't find cheap flights to Umeå, and are planning on hiring a car instead to drive there from Stockholm, the drive is around 400 miles (7 1/2 hours according to Google Maps). Most of this route will take you on Sweden's scenic fjordal coast, but why not make a loop of it and continue on from Umeå by ferry to Vaasa in Finland (approx. 200miles), and then back to Stockholm on the ferry from Turku?
