Mini Guide to Stockholm Any

Stunning Stockholm shimmers in the summer sun…and can be pretty spectacular in the winter too.

The Swedish capital is one of the most refined cities in Europe, a stylish design mecca that is becoming an increasingly popular weekend break destination from the UK .

Winters can be long, dark and harsh in this part of the world, so it is little wonder that Stockholm comes alive during the summer months. And you couldn't ask for a better playground than this - Stockholm is set on a series of small islands, and two-thirds of the city area is either parkland or water.

The heart of the city is the historic Gamla Stan ( Old Town ), a small pocket of narrow old streets lying under the shadow of the majestic 18 th century Kungliga Slottet, the largest royal palace in the world. The neighbouring island of Riddarholmen , to the west of Gamla Stan, remains off the beaten track despite boasting a wealth of beautiful old buildings.

Immediately east of Gamla Stan is Skeppsholmen, an interesting stepping stone on the way to the walking trails, museums and summer funfairs of Djurgarden.

South of Gamla Stan is the bohemian Sodermalm district – packed with trendy bars and shops. For an even more cutting-edge feel, head to the gentrified Kungsholmen area, west of the central station.

Stockholm has a huge range of accommodation, from hostels to ultra-stylish design hotels. It is worth booking in advance during the summer months and also note that because Stockholm is a big business city, rates generally go down at weekends.
