Mark Says

The last major Swedish town before the Arctic Circle, Östersund is a gateway to some outstanding winter sports opportunities and one of Europe's true wildernesses. It's also a vibrant town in its own right, with a beautiful lakeside setting and its very own version of the Loch Ness Monster thrown in for good measure.
Most visitors to Östersund are usually on their way somewhere else, be it skiing at the prestigious resort of Åre, where you're guaranteed several consecutive months of snow every year, or onward travel northwards towards the Arctic Circle and Lapland, where the Midnight Sun and Northern Lights take the breath away in summer and winter respectively. But stick around Östersund awhile and you may be surprised. Its setting on the giant Storsjön lake is tremendous, with cruises and bathing opportunities available in the summer months ' if you dare: Sweden's very own lake-dwelling beast, the Storsjöodjuret, is rumoured to lurk beneath these murky waters. The other main attraction in Östersund is the open-air museum of Jamtli, an impressively believable showcase for the surrounding Jämtland region's past, where people live and dress exactly as in the olden days.
If you've got time on your hands, one enchanting way to get to Östersund and beyond is the Inlandsbanan railway, a 1300 km-long train service starting in Kristinehamn in central Sweden and running all the way up to Gällivare in the north. Although a shadow of its former self and now privately-owned, it's still the most magical way to explore this wild and wonderful part of the country.

@Jodatu High speed should be just that - limited stop (which hs2 is), stations that provide onward connections (which hs2 does very poorly)

@Jodatu You wouldn't want 3 stations in Birmingham serving #HS2 - also, double deck, 400m long trains not compatible with classic track

@Jodatu You could make that argument about any central station or hub airport. Reality is, origin + connection passengers justify both
