More suggestions for finding cheap flights to Seville
Whereas Valencia has seen more evenly distributed competition, Seville's flights from the UK and Ireland are dominated by Ryanair, who offer cheap flights from London Stansted, Liverpool and Dublin. British Airways operate daily flights to Seville from Gatwick, through their holiday offshoot GB Airways, although the service is being withdrawn on October 25 (2006). Spanish national carrier Iberia offers daily Seville flights from Gatwick and Heathrow. Situated on the eastern side of the city, Seville’s San Pablo airport offers convenient road access to central Seville and the great Moorish city of Cordoba. From UK regional airports which do not offer direct flights to Seville, you might be will to find a limited number of connections via London or Brussels. Alternatively, it will usually be much cheaper to find a flight to Madrid or Málaga, and then to take land transport from there. Bear in mind though that the cheapest single fare on the AVE between Madrid’s Atocha station and Seville is around €70. The train journey from Málaga to Seville also takes around two and a half hours, but will only set you back around €16 each way. Regular coaches to Seville are also available from the main bus station in the centre of Málaga. They are priced competitively against the trains and take a similar amount of time to get to Seville. If you are planning a driving tour of inland Andalusia, then Jerez, Granada and Malaga are possible alternative airports.Trivia: Seville's eye-catching postmodern airport terminal was designed by the architect Rafael Moneo for the Seville World Expo in 1992.
Mini Guide to Seville
24 hours in Seville is enough to make anyone giddy. Everything about the city is intense: the deep orange scents, the oppressive summer heat, the melancholic flamenco, the exuberant locals, the lively nightlife…
But Seville also has a refined side, a sense of grandeur and style that is the perfect antidote to its brash alter-ego.
Bang in the middle of the city, you simply can’t avoid Seville’s cathedral and accompanying tower, La Giralda – originally the minaret of Moorish Seville’s main mosque. But the real beauty of Seville lies nearby, beyond the walls of the Alcázar palace. Few activities in Seville can be quite as enchanting as an aimless wander around its intricate network of rooms and gorgeous gardens, followed by an equally aimless wander through the adjacent Barrio de Santa Cruz, one of Spain’s most atmospheric neighbourhoods. It’s there that Seville’s heart beats strongest, and where you should make it a priority to immerse yourself in the city’s very traditional tapas culture. Indeed, one night spent bar- and tapas-hopping around Seville and you might think that the sevillanos top the global fun-loving charts.
For a spot of calm after the storm and some respite from the densely tangled city centre, a laze in the tranquil Parque de María Luisa or around the gracious Plaza de España should do the trick.
Anyone craving an almost stratospheric level of that andaluz intensity could try coming in late April, during the city’s annual Feria de Abril. This is truly the city in overdrive: music, dancing and bullfights, but accommodation at premium prices and availability to match – so book well in advance. For those of a quieter disposition, we’d recommend visiting any other month, except the height of summer, when even the locals retreat to the shadows from the intense heat.
