  • Flights to Romania - Overview

Since joining the European Union (EU) in January 2007, the availability of cheap flights to Romania has notably increased, although it is still some way off becoming the kind of budget airline hotspot that some travel industry pundits predicted.

There have been plenty of flights to Bucharest from London for many years, with both British Airways and national carrier Tarom, continuing to offer regular daily flights from London Heathrow. Additionally, Aer Lingus also offer direct flights to Bucharest from Dublin. All of these flights operate into Bucharest's larger Henri-Coanda international airport (OTP). The budget airline Wizzair was the first company to take advantage of Romania's new EU membership, launching cheap flights to Bucharest's original airport, Aurel Vlaicu (BBU), from Luton in January 2007. The airline will operate cheap flights to Bucharest from Liverpool later in 2007. Easyjet have also announced plans to launch cheap Bucharest flights from London Gatwick.

Beyond Bucharest, opportunities for flights to the rest of Romania are somewhat limited, although Wizzair are launching the first ever flights to Tirgu Mures in Transylvania in October. The Romanian regional airline Carpatair had previously planned to launch cheap flights from London Stansted to the western city of Timisoara, although these never got off the ground. Carpatair still maintain a hub in Timisoara, which can be reached by connecting flights from various other European cities.
There are currently three major airport construction projects in Romania, although none of these facilities have confirmed when passenger flights will start.

We are often asked why there aren't already more cheap flights to Romania. With concern mounting over rising fuel costs, the relatively long distance between the UK and Romania is certainly a factor, although the simple reality is that there is not enough potential business yet to justify a huge growth in new routes.

As the Romanian economy continues to grow, along with efforts to promote Romania's considerable inbound tourism potential, we expect to see more new routes announced. As Timisoara has been attempted before, we would expect either Carpatair or another airline to start flights to Timisoara ahead of the summer 2008 season. The Black Sea resort of Constanta would be another obvious choice for flights from the UK.

We hope that you have found this information about flights to Romania useful.
