Faro is the gateway to the hugely popular Algarve region of southern Portugal .
Year-round sunshine, fabulous beaches and world-class golf courses make this area a magnet for visitors from Britain .
Faro itself is an underwhelming town, short on sites having been burned to the ground by the Earl of Essex in the late 16 th century (and there was me thinking Portugal were our oldest allies?) and then flattened by the Great Earthquake of 1755, which also destroyed capital city Lisbon.
That said, part of Faro's charm is its sedate character, especially when compared to some of the raucous resorts along the southern Algarve coast. The walled old town, Cidade Velha, is well worth wandering around, as is the palm fringed waterfront.
Faro is also a great place to try the Algarve 's wealth of regional fish dishes.
The town's modest nightlife centres around Rua Conselheiro Bivar. Nearby Albufeira and Vilamoura are more lively.
There are plenty of hotels in Faro to suit all budgets, but try to book in advance during the peak summer season.
