@Jodatu You wouldn't get 20 coaches into New St, and you'd have to raise the roof - forget it!

Is it worth going via Katowice, or am I better off going straight to Krakow, but flying from East Midlands instead? I see it is Ryanair either way.

- have you ever even been to Poland?
-did you know that the centre of Katowice was once described as Little Paris?
-have you not heard of the Spodek centre, or of the Silesia City Center Mall - neither or which would be described as 'relics'?

It was a simnple question of comparison - would it be better to head for the world-acclaimed UNESCO protected centre of Krakow, or to go via Katowice first? I would take the latter option every time, because I have a strong interest in architectural history that goes well beyond picture postcard cities. However, I accept that most people do not have this - so if asked the same question about my city (Coventry), versus the world famous Warwick Castle or Shakespeare's home of Stratford Upon Avon, I would say the Warwickshire towns win hands-down. If, on ther other hand, you are interested in Urban Planning, Coventry City centre was pioneering in its time, and is still worth a look - whereas the Cathedral is also a significant centre of international peace work, aswell as being worthy of a visit for its architecture - but even saying that, I'm afraid it doesn't compare with Warwick Castle.
And as for your questions - well, as it happens - yes, yes and yes :)

I would love to visit Upper Silesia, and I would include both Katowice and Krakow on my list, together with a visit to the mountains in Zakopane, and I would also like to visit Warsaw. I have an interest in cities which have masterplanned elements, and I think Katowice has a number of landmark buildings I'd like to take a look at. But I don't think these are of interest to most tourists - no different to Milan - most people will go for the fashion or the football, and they will probably spend a little time looking at La Scala. Last time I went to Milan, I went to look at some modern developments which were well off the tourist trail - but they are only of very niche interest - which I will one day get round to blogging about!
