  • Flights to Poland - Overview

Whereas some former Eastern Bloc countries, such as Hungary and the Czech Republic, had already seen some reasonable levels of growth in no frills flights before they joined the EU in May 2004, Poland has shown the most substantial growth in new routes since this date. Although much of this popularity is due to Polish migrant workers finding job opportunities in the UK and Ireland (Sweden is the only other EU country not to have imposed limits on migration from the new EU accession states), there has also been plenty of uptake for city breaks to Polish cities such as Krakow, Warsaw and Gdansk. The more adventurous have also headed to cities like Lodz, which is known for its lively nightlife, whilst cities such as Szczecin and Poznan have also acted as alternative gateways to eastern Germany.

The initial influx of migrant workers and students is now being complemented by British citizens of Polish descent visiting friends and family, and vice versa. We expect to see continued growth in the availability of cheap flights to Poland over the next few years, due both to migration and Poland's excellent value as a short break destination. At present, Polish citizens only take an average of one flight every four years, compared to two to three flights per year for most western European countries. The rise of airlines such as Wizz Air and Sky Europe, together with Ryanair's declared ambition to open up at least one base in Poland within the next two years, should ensure that this growth continues.

We hope that you have found this information about flights to Poland useful.

    Mini guide to Poland

A medieval country at the heart of the New Europe, Poland offers a stepping stone between familiar destinations (such as Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia) and the vast, mysterious expanses of White Russia, Lithuania and the Ukraine. It remains a key industrial site in the centre of the continent, and the nation’s major cities have, over recent decades, enjoyed a social, cultural and economic boom easily marketable as “the Solidarity phenomenon”.

Poland’s unfortunate position sandwiched between the aspiring German and Russian empires has resulted in the country being used as an innocent pawn for hundreds of years. The second half of the 20th century saw Poland fall under the grip of Communism after the devastation of World War II, but 15 years after the collapse of the Iron Curtain Poland is now enjoying the fruits of freedom with some gusto and is a vocal member of the European Union.

For those touring central Europe in search of the legacies of World War II, Poland retains a considerable historical interest: the city of Krakow, for instance, is thankfully now a long way removed from the ghetto conditions imposed upon it by the Nazis. Lest this all appear somewhat forbidding, Poland has more to offer: beaches and resorts to its Baltic north, and a great range of lakes, forestry and mountains. Its heritage also means this is an area rich in castles and palaces, many of them restored.

Poland’s highlights also include beautiful Wroclaw, the port city of Gdansk, where Lech Walesa’ Solidarity movement took off, hiking in the Tatra mountains and the Baltic beaches around Leba. Even the capital Warsaw, long considered an uninspiring grey city, is getting in on the act with a host of new bars and designer hotels. Warsaw can be considered one of Europe’s great survivor cities, in its current incarnation boasting the much-loved Old Town, regular markets, cathedrals, and - further proof of the city’s capacity for renewal - a spate of new dining and entertainment options, including a thriving underground music scene.

One note of caution: the country’s proximity to the Russian wastes means temperatures really do plummet in winter - so wrap up warm…
