The relatively new airport at Oslo might not be as far away from the city centre as Torp, but it still requires a journey of over 30 miles to get a central Oslo. This has fortunately been made much easier by the Oslo Airport express train service, which stops at a number of additional towns beyond Oslo itself.

Mini Guide to Oslo International

Oslo is the most unassuming of the Scandinavian capitals, noted for its relaxed, small-town atmosphere.

Oslo is also the oldest capital in the region, founded in 1048 by Harald Hardrada, who was killed at the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066 during his ill-fated challenge for the English throne.

This former Viking stronghold is now best known as the home of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Oslo is dominated by the medieval Akershus Fortress, which stands above the eastern side of the harbour. Within the imposing walls lies the Akershus Castle , which was transformed into a spectacular Renaissance palace during the 17 th century.

One of Oslo 's most popular attractions is the National Gallery, which contains the country's biggest collection of Norwegian art. Visitors from around the world flock to see The Scream by Edvard Munch , Norway 's most revered artist. Munch fanatics can see thousands more of his paintings and drawings at the Munch Museum .

Located on the southern tip of the Oslofjord and surrounded by thick forest with a myriad of skiing and walking trails, this is a city which positively encourages its residents to get out and about. The nearby Bygdoy peninsular is an easy excursion from the city centre, and boasts some fine beaches, the superb Viking Ships Museum , and celebrated anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl's raft, the Kon-Tiki.

The best time to visit Oslo is during the pleasant summer months. Winters can be harsh, but the city is a good base for skiing.

Oslo 's hotels tend to be geared towards the business community, and as a result prices can be very steep, but rates are often slashed at weekends and in the summer when there are not many business travellers about.
