Connecting flights to Bodo

Flightmapping tip -- make sure you get a window seat for the landing at Bodo airport, which is situated on a peninsula to the west of the town. ;You should get excellent views of the fjord whether you are on the left or right hand side of the aircraft.
Cheap flights to Bodo – February 2009 flight price sample
We compared flights to Bodo using online travel agent expedia.co.uk for a one week trip starting on April 16. ;The cheapest flights from London weighed in at a whopping £296 -- this is what happens when there is no serious competition, as all flights were with SAS via Oslo. ;Unsurprisingly, flights to Bodo from Birmingham came in at an even more costly £389. Considering that there are no direct flights from Birmingham to Oslo, and that you have to change in Copenhagen first before proceeding to Oslo, these flights are probably not as much of a rip-off as the flights from London. ;Prices on flights from Manchester to Bodo weren't much better at £359, considering that, unlike Birmingham, Manchester does have a direct link with Oslo.
Curiously, Norwegian Air Shuttle shows connecting flights from Edinburgh to Bodo via Oslo on their route map. ;However, these are only bookable until the end of March. Flights departing on March 10 and returning two weeks later were available for €281 (approximately £250), but to fly from Edinburgh to Bodo on the above date in April, you will have to pay a whopping £406 (SAS -- outbound via Stockholm and Oslo, return via Oslo in Copenhagen).
You might well find that you can get much better value by booking two independent flights, especially as Ryanair offer cheap flights to Oslo Torp from Birmingham, Glasgow Prestwick, Liverpool and London Stansted. ;In the summer season, the SAS subsidiary Wideroe offer direct flights to Bodo from Oslo Torp, but outside this period, you can find flights to Bodo from Oslo International, either with SAS, or with the budget airline Norwegian Air Shuttle. ;Regular trains operate between Torp station (free shuttle bus from Torp airport) and Oslo International (Gardemoen) airport, but the journey takes almost two and a half hours.
Reaching Bodo by train

Bodo is the most northerly terminus of Norwegian Railways' Norland train route [picture], and a definite must for fans of scenic rail journeys. ;From Trondheim, the train takes nine hours and 45 minutes during the day, with one northbound departure at 7.40am. ;There is also a nightly sleeper service leaving Trondheim at 11.35pm. ; The full price for a one-way ticket on this line is 965 Norwegian Kroner (approximately £100), but you can get this price down to 399 Norwegian Kroner (£40) by booking ahead and taking advantage of the Minipris discount tickets. ;Travelling to Bodo by train from Oslo will take at least 17 hours, whereas you should allow at least 39 hours if you're planning on reaching Trondheim by train/ferry from London and continuing to Bodo. Minipris discounts for the train journey from Oslo to Bodo are not so extensive -- 1236 Norwegian Kroner, compared to a full price of 1310 Kroner.
Note that you can also board the Nordland train at Trondheim airport -- the 7.40am departure from Trondheim passes through the airport at 8.15am. ; Note that if you are wanting to book any onward rail travel from Trondheim airport, you will need to search the NSB website for 'VÆRNES', as it does not recognise Trondheim airport as a search term, even though the railway station is directly beneath the terminal. Regular flights to Trondheim from London are available with Norwegian Air Shuttle.

@Jodatu High speed should be just that - limited stop (which hs2 is), stations that provide onward connections (which hs2 does very poorly)

@Jodatu You wouldn't want 3 stations in Birmingham serving #HS2 - also, double deck, 400m long trains not compatible with classic track

Flightmapping.com Flightmapping.com

@Jodatu You could make that argument about any central station or hub airport. Reality is, origin + connection passengers justify both
