There are four commercial airports on Sardinia, three of which have regular direct flights from the UK. Alghero in the northwest of the island has been quietly developing a number of inbound links from Ryanair bases throughout Europe, including London Stansted and Liverpool, whereas Easyjet offer regular cheap flights to the northeastern port of Olbia from London Gatwick, and the capital Cagliari from London Luton. Italian regional airline Meridiana also offer flights to Olbia and Cagliari, whereas British Airways franchise partner GB Airways offer flights to Cagliari. There are also a few charter flights to Sardinia available during the summer season. Note that Sardinia is a lot larger than many people imagine. Driving along the winding mountain passes and cliff-hugging coastal roads is an exhilarating experience, but it is best to get flights to whichever airport is closest to your final destination if you don’t like driving. Public transport across Sardinia is also tortuously slow, but the rail journeys into the interior give plenty of opportunities to enjoy the breathtaking scenery without having to worry about being tailgated by short tempered local drivers.
