More suggestions for finding cheap flights to Milan Any

Flights to Milan are available from a wide range of UK airports. There are four airports serving the Milan region, so it is well worth considering which airport is best to fly into, as well as the ticket price.

The main airport in Milan is Malpensa, which is the central hub for struggling national airline Alitalia. British Airways also operate flights to Malpensa from London and some of their major UK regional bases. Malpensa is often cited by budget airlines as the ultimate example of a "marble floored, goldplated" terminal (the former is certainly true), but faced with the ongoing difficulties of Alitalia, airport authorities have managed to attract Easyjet to set up camp there. However, for the time being at least, Easyjet's cheap flights to Milan from London operate into Linate Airport.

Linate is the closest to the city centre, and is used for flights from London operated by Alitalia and BMI British Midland. The airport is heavily congested, with its outdated facilities hemmed in by surrounding suburban residential areas.

Other budget airlines operate flights to Bergamo, which is around 30 miles to the east of Milan.  Note that this is only one mile further away from central Milan than Malpensa - in fact there is very little difference in the road journey time between these airports and central Milan, although Malpensa does also offer the option of a slightly quicker (but much more expensive) train journey.

Finally, Parma, around 50 miles of the south of Milan, is also designated by IATA as a Milan airport. Ryanair have recently launched cheap flights to Parma from London Stansted, offering an alternative to their existing flights to Milan Bergamo.

Mini Guide to Milan Any

Milan is dirty, it's got a significant problem with petty crime, and it certainly isn't pretty, but…and this is big but…if you have even a passing interest in fashion, football or opera, then this city is utopia.

All the big Italian fashion houses from Armani and Dolce & Gabbana to Valentino and Versace are based in Milan , not to mention terrace favourites CP Company and Stone Island .

Football fans are spoilt for choice, not only is Milan home to two of the biggest teams in the world, AC and Inter, but they both play at arguably the most spectacular and atmospheric stadium of them all, the stunning 85,000 capacity San Siro.

There are numerous package tours offering flights, accommodation and match tickets to see either of the Milan giants, but it is easy to buy tickets (apart from derby games and matches against perennial rivals Juventus) if you happen to be in town on match day.

Neither team has cottoned onto the potential for merchandising like their English counterparts, which is perhaps a good thing in theory, but not in practice (especially when you waste a day trying to find somewhere that might sell a Marco Van Basten poster).

Performances at the world's most famous (and recently restored) opera house, La Scala, take place from December until July.

The city's most famous landmark is the astonishing Duomo, a gothic cathedral which took 600 years to complete after initially being commissioned in 1386.

Compared to the rest of Italy , hotels in Milan can be very expensive. The city is busy all year round, so book well ahead to avoid disappointment. Also bear in mind that many businesses close during August when most Milanese take their summer holidays.
