More suggestions for finding cheap flights to Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki, which is often promoted by tour operators as Halkidiki (the nearby resort peninsular), has a reasonable range of charter flights during the summer season. British Airways and the Greek national airline Olympic offer year-round flights to Thessaloniki from London Gatwick. In May, Easyjet are starting cheap flights to Thessaloniki, from their Dortmund hub in Germany. Although the flight times between Germany and Greece are notably shorter than they are between the UK and Greece, Easyjet have not ruled out offering flights to Thessaloniki from London, in addition to their established route to Athens. If you're unable to find direct flights to Thessaloniki, then you should be able to find connections through Athens, or European hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich and Paris.
Mini Guide to Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, but the main attraction in this part of the world are the extraordinary natural wonders of the nearby Halkidiki peninsular: long stretches of fine sand, and the clear blue waters of the Aegean Sea.
The birthplace of the philosopher Aristotle, Halkidiki is comprised of three “fingers” jutting out from the mainland. Sithonia and Kassandria form the prime destinations for tourism and nightlife, while Mount Athos, otherwise known as the “Holy Mountain of Orthodoxy”, plays home to a monastic community with a door policy stricter than that of the mainland‘s nightclubs: male travellers wanting a peek at this most sacred of territories must apply for a permit six months before setting out; women are forbidden from entering at all. This part of the world, at the heart of what was once the Macedonian empire, naturally lends itself to heritage and tradition. The capital Poligyros, Olynthos and Thessaloniki all house archaeological museums. Folklore museums can be found in Aphytos and Amaia as well as the capital. Poligyros also boasts an open-air amphitheatre. But such classicism is the norm in these parts, not the exception: every town you visit and each house you pass suggests something of what it must have been like to live in the Halkidiki of the past. Of course, in between the history, there's more than ample room for growth and new life. This is a (perhaps surprisingly) green area, one rich in agriculture. Tobacco and grain are major exports; the streets are lined with olive trees; there are vineyards to visit, and Poligyros in particular is blessed with more than its fair share of parkland. If none of that revitalises you, head for the beach, and dip a toe into waters naturally heated to just the right temperature…
