Mini Guide to Corfu
Formerly under Macedonian, Roman, French and English control, the island has long become used to the annual invasion of foreigners. Yet despite the availability of cheap package deals, and the bars and clubs dotted around the isle, Corfu - unlike many other resorts in the area - primarily attracts a mature crowd. Activities tend towards the peaceful end of the spectrum: diving is a popular pastime, as are biking and hiking around some breathtaking terrain.
It is fair to say Corfu revolves around tourism. Outside the summer months, the island busies itself with preparations for the following season. Olives are picked, and local breads made. Visiting Corfu in spring, autumn and winter allows the traveller to appreciate the island’s great natural beauty - and the very friendly and approachable locals - without the aggro and hassle of the crowds. The only minor problem may be getting there: outside of peak times, flights to and from the island are routed via Athens.
