Mark Says

Hanover is probably best known in this country for providing us with five kings, including Mad King George. The capital of Lower Saxony gained further international attention when it hosted the World Expo in 2000. Unfortunately the festival wasn't an unbridled success, attracting barely half of the expected numbers ' somewhat ironic considering the city has no trouble bringing in big numbers (albeit business types rather than tourists) to its numerous trade shows. Hanover has been an important commercial centre since the Middle Ages, and embraced the industrial revolution with some gusto during its early 19 th century hey-day. As a key manufacturing town, Hanover was targeted heavily by allied bombers during World War II, and much of the Old Town had to be completely rebuilt. Finding the city's main sights couldn't be easier, simply follow the Roter Faden, a red line leading from the station through the old town. In the centre stands the Marktkirche, a 14 th century church with stunning stained-glass windows. Other medieval buildings can be found around Knochenhauerstasse, Kramerstrasse and Burgstrasse. Further along the Roter Faden is the domed New Town Hall , which has a curved lift, slanting as it takes you around the dome's exterior to a platform from where you can see the Maschsee Lake and the Sprengel Museum , which has a fine collection of 20 th century art. The nearby Museum for Lower Saxony includes works by Botticelli and Rubens. If you are visiting during the summer then head to the Herrenhauser Gardens three miles west of the city centre for classical music and fireworks in the baroque setting of the Grosser Garten. Accommodation can be hard to find when trade fairs are in town, so it is always worth booking ahead if possible.
