Mark Says
Frankfurt claims to be the smallest metropolis in the world, which is a big (or, depending on your viewpoint, small) claim to make. This is no idle boast though – Frankfurt certainly counts as a metropolis, it is a major world financial centre, a cultural powerhouse, and its main airport carries more passengers than any other on the Continent.
Frankfurt is also remarkably compact, and every major attraction is packed within the city’s central core. This includes the Museumsufer - a conglomerate of 13 major museums (devoted to, amongst other subjects, natural history, Jewish history, German architecture and applied arts) dotted on either side of the river Main. A further 50 museums are situated in the vicinity.
Frankfurt is a truly international city and plays home to a diverse selection of cultures, not to mention the multiple contradictions of the modern city. On one hand, this is a moneyed metropolis, the site of the Bundesbank, the European Central Bank, and the largest Stock Exchange in Europe. On the other hand, Frankfurt has always overseen transactions in words and ideas, too. The city was the home of Germany’s most celebrated writer, Wolfgang Goethe, whilst the Frankfurt School was made famous by the works of philosopher Theodor Adorno.
Germany’s first national assembly was held in the Paulskirche in 1848, establishing Frankfurt as the home of Teutonic democracy. Frankfurt’s annual Book Fair, first staged in 1949, is also a major date in the literary world’s calendar.

To cut a long story short - I ended up being over an hour and a half late for a major meeting, my German hosts clearly thinking that my "flew into the wrong airport" excuse was up there with "the dog ate my homework"!
I appreciate that I should check the smallprint more carefully etc, but I can't be the only person to have made such a mistake.
