Mini Guide to Dusseldorf International
Dusseldorf is one of Europe 's most fashionable cities. Now, I know this might sound like a bit of a misnomer, after all Germany is not a country noted for its trend setting, but you'll need to cast aside your preconceptions of stonewash jeans and blonde mullets if visiting this particular pocket of Rhineland.
Dusseldorf , which is situated on the Rhine River 15 miles north of Cologne , is a shopper's utopia, with a staggering range of exclusive shops and boutiques. Konigsallee is one of the most elegant shopping streets in Europe , and if you want to observe the latest styles and looks fresh off the catwalk, then this is the place to be. North of Konigsallee is the Hofgarten, Germany 's oldest inner-city public park dating back to 1769.
As well as being Germany 's fashion capital, sophisticated Dusseldorf is also a cultural leader. The city boasts the German Opera House, and a fabulous array of theatres and museums, including the renowned Kunstsammlung Nord-Rhein-Westfalen modern art museum.
80% of Dusseldorf was destroyed by allied bombers during World War II, but the Old Town has retained its historic charm, not to mention over 250 pubs. A delightful promenade lined with restaurants bars runs between the Old Town and the Rhine River . This is also a good starting point for many of the boat trips along the Rhine .
Dusseldorf is a major conference and business centre and hotel rates tend to be more expensive when a big exhibition is on, so book in advance if possible. Summer is a good time to visit because the weather it at its best and there tend to be less business events taking place in the city.

More flights tips
- If you're planning on booking flights to Düsseldorf and then travelling on to other German cities by train, we would suggest checking out the German Railways website before you set off. There are two stations serving Düsseldorf airport - underneath the main terminal complex is the local S-bahn station, which provides regular but slow suburban trains into Düsseldorf itself and some of the surrounding areas; and the long-distance station, which is served by the ICE high-speed train and other mainline services. To get to the long-distance station, you will need to take the monorail which runs from the upper levels of the airport’s three terminals. If you just want to go to the centre of Dusseldorf, or if you have a connection to make through Düsseldorf’s central station (Hauptbanhof), then you will probably find that the S-bahn is a much more convenient option.
