Mini Guide to Dusseldorf Any
This key telecommunications and fashion centre in the heart of Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr industrial belt counts as its best known sons none other than late 1970s/early 80s musical pioneers Kraftwerk. It’s an association that fits Dusseldorf, with its welding of electronica, efficiency and trend-setting, to a black-clad, unsmiling, finely-tuned tee: one suspects there must be a dozen Kraftwerks-in-waiting dotted about the city as it stands today, slaving away in the IT departments of Dusseldorf’s many new media enterprises.
Perhaps they spend their lunch hours browsing the corridors of the city’s Academy of Fine Arts, with its close links to Joseph Beuys and Paul Klee, or the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, with its works by Picasso and Matisse. At weekends, they might brush up on their knowledge of the classics at the home of the German Opera, or simply stroll along the embankments and promenades of the Rhine in a search for more musical inspiration.
Dusseldorf clearly has an eye for all things avant-garde: the promenades lead towards the spanking new Media Harbour, where numerous state-of-the-art constructions are firmly upstaged by Frank Gehry’s wibbly-wobbly New Customs House. For more traditional fare, head to Altstadt (Old Town), with its altogether more seasoned restaurants and taverns; for (pricey) shopping, make for Konigstrasse (King’s Avenue), which lives up to its illustrious name in playing home to Gucci, Prada, Cartier and many others.
