More suggestions for finding cheap flights to Berlin Any
Compared to other German cities such as Frankfurt, Munich or Düsseldorf; flights to Berlin tend to be much more dominated by the no-frills airlines than they are by traditional scheduled carriers. This is perhaps in many ways due to Berlin's unique history - flights into Tegel airport have always been restricted by lack of capacity, whereas flights to the former East German airport of Schönefeld have expanded massively since the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification.
On the downside, this has meant that major regional airports such as Birmingham and Manchester do not have direct flights to Berlin, despite having flights are so many other destinations in Germany. On the positive front, numerous other UK regional airports can offer direct flights to Berlin Schönefeld, which is a major hub for both Easyjet and Ryanair. It is also used by German airlines such as Germanwings, but not for flights to and from the UK. Unsurprisingly, Berlin is also a major base for Air Berlin, even if it isn't actually their most important hub -- again, perhaps because they operate flights from congested Tegel instead of Schönefeld!

February 2009 flight price comparison notes
We looked at prices for flights to Berlin (and other ways of getting there if direct flights weren't available) for one-week trips in mid April and mid-August from a variety of different airports in the UK and Ireland. As we're checking prices in February, there are still some months to book ahead before some prices reach their peak, although as our sample prices showed, the prices from some departure airports were already getting on the high side.
Berlin transport development
The historic Tempelhof airport finally closed its doors in October 2008. A new 'Berlin Brandenburg International' (BBI) airport is being developed on the same site as Schoenefeld, and this will finally replace congested Tegel. The new airport will also be a fully integrated air and rail hub, although it is somewhat doubtful that the many billions of euros being poured into this new development will ever see much of a return, as Lufthansa already uses Frankfurt international, Munich, and to a lesser extent Düsseldorf, as hub airports. However, supporters of the airport claim that it will have the advantage of being one hour's flying time further east, which will enable airlines to offer flights to Asia using just one crewing shift, thus making Berlin a low cost gateway to the Far East. We will believe that when we see it, but in the meantime Berlin has already firmly re-established itself on the rail map with its ultramodern, and almost Fritz Lang-esque Central Station (Berlin Hauptbahnhof).
Mini Guide to Berlin Any
Berlin 's failure to lure more of the no-frills airlines remains a continuing disappointment to us here at Flightmapping. The German capital is undoubtedly one of the most exciting and vibrant cities in Europe, where striking modernity mixes with hulking symbols of Communism and rapidly gentrifying bohemian quarters. The building boom that took over Berlin in the immediate aftermath of German reunification in the early 1990s is still in full swing, and although some of the new projects – Potsdamer Platz in particular – have not been met with universal approval, the raw energy of this immense work in progress gives this city a unique appeal. The old divisions, both in a physical sense and on the psyche of the local population are still apparent today, over 15 years after the wall came crumbling down, but east and west Berlin are sure to come together next summer when the city's Olympic Stadium hosts the World Cup Final. Berlin has a staggering array of world class museums, vast open parks and great shopping to lure visitors, whilst the nightlife is simply legendary. Visiting Berlin at any time of year will be a rewarding experience, but it is worth noting that the winter months can be pretty grim unless you happen to be in town when a fresh blanket of snow has just fallen. The city comes alive during the warm summer months as everybody makes as much of the sun as possible. Berlin boasts a huge range of accommodation from uniformly clean and tidy hostels to the latest design hotels. Unlike in most other European capitals, you will not need to break the bank to find a reasonable place to stay in Berlin .
