Delightful cobbled streets meander through the district, including the traboules, a network of covered passageways originally built to protect delicate silk from the rain during Lyon 's silk-trading heyday during the 1700s. Vieux Lyon is dominated by the magnificent Gothic St-Jean Cathedral.

The heart of the city is the Presqu'ile, a narrow strip of land where the two rivers meet. This is the best place to explore Lyon 's chic shops. Across the Saone to the west is Vieux Lyon and Fourviere Hill, which is topped by the beautiful Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourviere, Lyon 's most famous landmark. Over the Rhone to the east of Presqu'ile, is the elegant Rive Gauche district.

There is a wide range of good quality accommodation in Lyon, but note that it is a major business centre and rates can be high, especially during the week.
