Although much of Salzburg's popularity is due to its proximity to a number of major Austrian ski resorts, more and more budget airlines are also realising that the destination can be popular year-round, both with culture vultures wanting to visit the home of Mozart, and with any hikers who want to enjoy the surrounding Sound of Music country. Most of the major UK no-frills airlines offer Salzburg flights from one or more of their respective hubs, with Ryanair offering a particularly impressive range of cheap flights to Salzburg during the ski season.
If you cannot find direct flights to Salzburg, then you are more likely to find connecting flights via Frankfurt or Zurich than through the Austrian capital Vienna, which is poorly served by feeder flights from the UK. Alternatively, Salzburg is around two hours by land from Munich. Although Salzburg offers an impressive range of ski flights, there is a better choice of year-round flights to Munich.

On the other hand, it's easy to see why flights to Vienna work from Heathrow airport, as the Austrian capital is an important destination both the business and pleasure. So the question I'd ask is the other way around -- given that Vienna is also such a key European city, why is it so hard to fly there from anywhere outside London?
