Mini guide to Albania
Here’s one of the better kept secrets in Europe. Under the leadership of Enver Hoxha, secretary-general of the Communist Party, Albania lay hidden behind the Iron Curtain for decades, known solely for being the only atheist state on the planet, and the whipping boys of European football qualifiers. In the decade and a half since the Curtain was lifted, both Albania’s markets and its borders have opened to the wider world: currently awaiting membership to the European Union, its leaders have done much to promote tourism in the region, and the country today emerges as a relatively unspoilt, if decidedly eccentric, destination looking out onto the Adriatic Sea.
That eccentricity manifests itself most prominently in the capital city Tirana, which tends towards the overcrowded, with sporadic water and electricity problems, and outdated, diesel-fuelled cars puttering around potholed streets releasing EU-distressing levels of pollution into the atmosphere. When the smoke clears, it’s here you’ll find the country’s National Historical Museum, the building formerly known as the Enver Hoxha Pyramid (now the International Cultural Centre) and an Archaeological Museum
If you prefer to see your old bones out in the field, then a trip to Butrint (Buthrotum) is a must. Situated on the coast overlooking Corfu, this UNESCO World Heritage site is an archaeological wonder - an amphitheatre sits alongside remains of an acropolis, thermal baths, and a fortress to hold foreign invaders at bay. Today’s Albania is altogether more welcoming: only a couple of hours from Italy via ferry, it is - unusually for a former Communist stronghold - strongly pro-American, a result of US intervention in Kosovo; Tirana even plays host to a University of New York. British travellers should be encouraged by the way the Albanian nation regards pratfalling comic Norman Wisdom as an adopted son: for best results, be sure to pack a flat cap, and get to work on your best “Mr. Grimsdale!” impersonation.
