Mini Guide to Mexico City
How much bigger can it get before popping? The population currently stands at around 20 million (roughly three times the size of London) and is reputed to be growing at the rate of 1000 people per day as people from poor rural areas come looking for work. It is literally bursting at the seams, every last inch of land has been built upon, and the sprawl stretches way up into the surrounding hills.
Because the city is flat it is easy to forget it is situated on a plateau 2400m above sea level. There isn’t much oxygen at this level, and matters are not helped by the smog inducing traffic that clogs the city. The most mundane tasks, such as climbing a flight of steps, become hard work until your body has acclimatised. If you have time, do as little as possible during the first couple of days of your stay – then you will be ready to hit the streets of this mammoth city.
You would think the sheer size of Mexico City would make it a daunting place to visit, but the excellent underground network makes getting around very easy, and there are some outstanding attractions on offer to visitors, including the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, which contains the best collection of pre-Columbian artefacts in the world, and the teeming central market with its bewildering array of goods from around the country. There are also a number of fascinating Aztec sights in and around the city.
Every type of accommodation to suit all budgets is available in Mexico City, from ramshackle hostels to design hotels. The city is warm all year round, but rarely gets too stifling due to its high altitude. Rainfall can be heavy during the summer months, but it is relatively dry the rest of the time.
