US administered Puerto Rico is extremely popular for visitors from the mainland USA and Canada, but it has never really been marketed to UK tourists.
Although other Spanish-speaking Caribbean destinations such as Cuba and the Dominican Republic maintain regular flight links with the UK, the only scheduled European flights to Puerto Rico operate from the Spanish capital Madrid.
Luis Muņoz international airport (SJU), which is located just outside the island's capital, San Juan, is one of the busiest in the Caribbean, and a major base for American Airlines. This usually makes connecting flights to San Juan via New York a much cheaper option than flights to Puerto Rico via other nearby Caribbean islands such as Antigua. Flights from the US mainland are also available to Aguadilla, and there are local connections serving the southern resort of Ponce.
