Mini Guide to Grenada

Capital city St George’s, with its blend of British and French architectural styles, is noted as one of the most beautiful harbours in the Caribbean and local law stating that no building can be taller than a coconut palm tree means the island remains delightfully free of large-scale development.

Although sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1498, Grenada was not settled by Europeans for over 100 years. In 1650 the French ‘bought’ the island from the indigenous Caribs. It remained under French control until it was ceded to the British in the late 18th century. Political instability rocked Grenada during the decade following independence in 1974. The island was plagued by corruption before flirting with Marxism following a bloodless coup led by the charismatic lawyer Maurice Bishop in 1979. Bishop was ousted by the military four years later, and in the ensuing power-vacuum, the United States led a rather cack-handed, but ultimately successful, attempt to restore democracy. Two natural disasters have thrust Grenada back into the media spotlight in recent years. In November 1999 Hurricane Lenny devastated the west coast of the island. Then Hurricane Ivan caused widespread damage across the whole island last September (2004). 90% of the island was flattened, but each day brings marked improvement.

Grenada is popular with independent travellers because of its abundance of small hotels and guesthouses, and many of them have already re-opened. Most of the businesses and restaurants catering for tourists are also operating normally. Grenada is rarely overwhelmed with crowds and the weather is warm all year round. The Hurricane Season falls roughly between June and November, but serious storms are rare. The second weekend in August is when the island’s biggest and busiest event, Carnival, takes place – so book well in advance if you want to join the party.
