The typical price of return scheduled flights to Santo Domingo is often above £500, depending on the time of year you are travelling. Whereas there is plenty of competition between scheduled and charter airlines on flights to many other Caribbean destination, the same cannot be said for flights to the Dominican Republic, as the scheduled airlines don't currently serve this market. We would certainly only recommend looking for scheduled flights to Santo Domingo if the charter timings are not convenient, or if you need availability around particular dates. The prices of flights to Santo Domingo don't favour connections via any particular route, but we would generally recommend flights via Madrid or another Caribbean island over flights via the USA. This isn't just because of the shorter route - avoiding US airports takes away the need to pass through US immigration, which you will have to do in both directions.
