Flights to Dominica - Overview
Although Dominica has two airports (Melville Hall - DOM and Cane Field - DCF), neither has the facilities to handle long-haul flights from the UK. Local connecting flights to Dominica are available from several other islands in the Caribbean. Note that Cane Field, which generally handles fewer flights, is closest to the capital Roseau, whereas Melville Hall airport is closer to the town of Portsmouth - but still on the other side of the island!
Despite ongoing expansion at Melville Hall airport, neither of Dominica's airports has the ability to handle flights after dark. This can make same day flight connections from the UK difficult, especially if there are delays.
The cheapest flights to Dominica are often with American Airlines, via San Juan in Puerto Rico, and one of their major gateway hubs - usually New York JFK.
The most convenient transfer points are Antigua and Barbados, although in our opinion, Grantley Adams airport in Barbados is a considerably more pleasant place to spend time between flights than VC Bird airport in Antigua. However, timings for flights to Dominica via Antigua are currently much more favourable than flights via Barbados - look out for this when making a booking.
Don't be deceived by the seemingly short distances between the two airports in Dominica - driving times are considerably lengthened due to the winding terrain on the island. For similar reasons, we would certainly not advise making your own flight transfers to Dominica via St Lucia, as this would also entail a lengthy transfer between two different airports. However, if you are travelling on a LIAT flight from Barbados to Dominica, and this involves a stop in St Lucia (Castries - Vigie - SLU), then this shouldn't be such a problem - but check if this is just a touch and go (usually about 15 minutes), or longer than that.
Note that Dominica is a completely different destination to the Dominican Republic, which is served by regular charter flights from various airports throughout the UK.
We hope that you have found this information about flights to Dominica useful.
