Mini guide to Cuba
A perennial destination of choice for left-leaning students on gap years and stray Manic Street Preachers, this island off the coast of Miami - and just south west of the Bahamas (so that's the weather sorted, then) - has a curious relationship with the U.S. that hasn't entirely been worked out. Just as Cuba's poorest citizens traditionally set out on home-made rafts to cross the Straits of Florida and reach the American Dream, the United States authorities have returned the favour of late by stationing terrorist suspects, prisoners and anybody else they so care in Cuba's very own Guantanamo Bay. Most tourism invariably heads to Havana, on the opposite side of the island, which benefits from its reputation as being at the heart of ailing dictactor Fidel Castro's Communist Cuba: a colourful yet engagingly old-fashioned city, still largely untouched by the trappings of the corporate West. One last thing: anyone going in search of original members of the Buena Vista Social Club better book their flights quick; their numbers are dropping, it seems, by the day.
